These blackcurrant sundaes looked delicious and consist of a pastry tart, filled with a blackcurrant filling, a swirl of buttercream and a sponge disc on top. Although I really liked the blackcurrant filling, which was the right combination of tangy and sweet, the buttercream tasted of margarine and was very sickly and cloying. The pastry was nice enough, but overall they don't taste as good as they look.
Price: £2.00 for four
Rating: 3/5
We have just purchased the new black currant sundaes. We are very disspaointd they are smaller and the pastry is flaky. It seems that have made them smaller and less fruit.
ReplyDeleteI have just bought the new blackcurrant sundaes. Bought them every week along with the pineapple tarts. I don't like the new design /recipe as much so I won't buy then again. I hope they don't mess about with the pineapple tarts too.
ReplyDeleteI just purchased the new blackcurrant sundaes just to try them. Never again. Will not purchase again. Have been a regular purchase every week. The new sundae is terrible.
ReplyDeleteM&S Get your act together and bring back the old ones....
So, so, so dissapointed with the "new improved receipe". I have been having these blackcurrant sundaes since I was a child (I am now 56!) as my mother loved them and introduced me to this treat. They have changed slightly over the years but not that drastically and whenever I am in M&S I have always "treated myself" and my own daughters have grown up loving them too. Bought some yesterday and can safely say they were horrid and will not be buying them again. I used to enjoy the different tastes of the buttercream, the blackcurrant filling, the sponge top and the pastry base. They also look revolting now with the purple buttercream. Please can you change them back to the original as this time it is not a "new improved receipe"
ReplyDeleteI messaged M&S on Facebook to let them know what I thought. I have also sent them the link to this post but best to message them directly on Facebook so they get the message. I only hope they don't change the pineapple tarts :-).
ReplyDeleteJust purchased the new recipe blackcurrant sundaes, what are you thinking M&S?? These are terrible, like previous comments, I have been eating the old style since childhood, but won't be going anywhere near these cheap looking, cheap tasting articles again(packaging appears bigger so perhaps the money has been spent there). Who ever convinced you to change this recipe deserves a massive pay rise, because they certainly have a the gift of the gab,but please do not let them near the chicken jalfrezi!! Or perhaps better still they should be sacked. Please change them back.
ReplyDeleteWhy on earth change a successful recipe that has worked for more than 50 years?? Whoever came up with this idea needs sacking. Bring back the much loved blackcurrant sundaes. I won't be buying the new ones again
ReplyDeleteLynne
What have you done to this product.
ReplyDeleteThey taste completely different, surely they should be sold under a new name.
Please start using the old recipe again.
Blackcurrant Sundaes... why why why ... ,Change them ??? My family have been buying these for over 50 years , they were just perfect the way they were .... the new recipe is NOT IMPROVED , Not very nice , so disappointed, Bring the old ones back
ReplyDelete.... why change something that is so good .... if it's not broken why fix it ????
The original black currant sundaes have been made to the same recipe for more years than I care to remember. However the new ones are simply horrible and I will never buy them again. Come on M&S, listen to your customers and bring back the originals.
ReplyDeleteThese black current sundaes have been around for 60 years,my life time. The new ones didn't appeal to me visually....but reasonably ok when I've had all four I will give my opinion
ReplyDelete.shame you felt you had to change them
Hi M&S, what have you done to the Blackcurrant Sundae's, used to be a nice cream and a delicious pastry and filling. Now they appear to have NEW on the label, and as usual NEW seems to mean cheaper and worse. A mucky yellow and pink stained cream, and the case now taste and feels like something made from foam rubber. Please, please, please bring back the originals, as these were always a treat from my daughter when she goes shopping. Now have to look for something else..
ReplyDeleteThank you for your comment! Just wanted to mention, I'm not associated with M&S in any way, I just love to review their food products.
DeleteI will be reviewing the new Blackcurrant Sundaes soon, so I will let you know what I think. Reading some of these comments though I'm not too hopeful.
What have M&S done with the new blackcurrant sundaes? I agree with the other people who are disappointed that M&S have changed the cakes we have bought for years. The new blackcurrant sundaes are shocking. Much sweeter than the original ones. Why change a recipe that works? The purple and white buttercream is disgusting and the blackcurrant jam overly sweet. The sponge disc which tops the tart has been reduced and the recipe changed. I can get over taking away the individual silver cake cases to save money and be less wasteful but not change the actual cake recipe. I had already complained about the "new" jam and sponge in a pastry case cakes (looks like a mini bakewell tart but nowhere near as nice), which we bought when the blackcurrant sundaes were being "redeveloped". Don't buy those either. Bring back the old blackcurrant sundaes please. I will be trying the Tesco and Waitress versions which look more like the old M&S ones but without the sponge disc.
ReplyDeleteTo be honest it seems all the new sweets that say 'New on the packinging are an inferior replacement for the predecessor. All i can say is whoever came up with these new recipes, they were obviously not regular buyers of the original products. They are dry and quite frankly horrible. I let M&s know and they weren't interested. They just more or less said thanks. The fact they have not listened to anyone shows what customer focus they have. Since they brought in these new recipes though I have shopped around and found some very nice desserts and sweets. Unfortunately not M&s though but that's their loss not mine.
ReplyDeleteSend they have changed them yet again. They have done away with the pyrple coloured icing but other than that, they are still the inferior new recipe which is dry and not as good as the old ones.
ReplyDeleteWhy, oh why was it necessary to change the blackcurrent sundaes? I always treat myself to a box whenever I shop there and was SO disappointed yesterday when I took one from the box to have. They are not an improvement in any way whatsoever and therefore will not be buying any more unless the recipe is returned to previous standard. Sorry M & S, but you haven't done yourselves any favours by messing about with the ingredients.
ReplyDeleteWe used to always buy these - bought them for years. Just tried the new ones - terrible! Will not buy again.
ReplyDeleteWe are so disappointed! Come on M and S - change them back please!
The lovely tart black currant taste is gone....
I agree with the above comments - The Blackcurrant Sundae has always been a constant since my childhood, eating them always invoked happy memories. Having finally decided to give the new ones a try I was so very, very disappointed. They are quite simply pants!
ReplyDeleteWhatever was wrong with a tried and tested formula that loyal customers have been buying for years? "If it ain't broke don't fix it!"
I shall not be purchasing this grossly inferior product again. You have shot yourselves in the foot over this one!
Please bring the old recipe back.

ReplyDeleteLike so many other people I have just bought the sundaes having not had them for a while and was very disappointed. Nothing like they used to be. Now seem to be more pastry than anything else and definitely wo't be buying again.
ReplyDeleteIs this progress? These new sundaes are rubbish. M&S please listen to your market!
ReplyDeleteA year and a half M&S customers have been wasting their time complaining and just like Teresa May they don't like listening to the public. How can M&S legally call them blackcurrant sundaes, their smaller, have loads of cream with the dearest slither of blackcurrant. No doubt the next improved sundae will be even smaller.
ReplyDeleteDitto previous comments
ReplyDeleteThese do not taste of black currant it is a thick solid tasteless filling
What on earth have you done M & S
I haven't had them for a long time. NEVER again. A most unpleasant experience. The blackcurrant was like overcooked jam, very chewy and not a nice taste. The buttercream was like margarine. Pastry did not taste like it had been made with butter. Shame as I recall they used to be so good.
ReplyDeleteThese really are a poor imitation of the old much-loved sundaes....very disappointing
ReplyDeleteMy friend and I have just discussed our disappointment on the New version of the Black Currant Sundaes. We were both big fans of the old version, these being our absolute favourite cakes. So disappointed, please change them back!
ReplyDeleteSo upset the new blackcurrant sundaes are horrible. They taste salty sweet and the blackcurrant is lumpy ugh. Please use the old recipe I'm really upset .
